Gobar Gas Plant for Orphanage Sustainability in Karnataka

Pragathi, Mysore, Karnataka

Contact: Mr. Sharanappa

Dates: September 2025 – September 2026

Total Budget: Rs. 9,23,000

2025 Funding: Rs.5,25.000 ($6,176)

Pragathi runs an orphanage for 90+ tribal children on the outskirts of Mysore, Karnataka. PPI helped build the orphanage with a low-cost brick making project and subsequent completion of rooms with Pragathi from 2009-2014 period. Their current food (basically milk products) and cooking expenses with LPG gas cylinders come to Rs. 52000/month. The orphanage requested funding to purchase five cows and to install a Gobar Gas plant, intending to use cow dung for generating gas to support cooking needs.  All the expenses are for the purchase of cows, cow fodder, feeds, and Gobar gas unit. Total budget is Rs. 9,23,000, and they requested Rs. 5,25,000 from PPI. They are raising the rest of Rs. 3,98,000 with local donations.  Funds were approved and sent in September of this year. The project will meet their needs and be self-supporting in the long run with savings Rs 52000/month.   As cows give birth, excess calves and extra milk will be sold to support maintenance and operational expenses.  Additionally, this decreases reliance on external fuel needs (LPG cylinders) and is better for the environment.
