Vocational Training in Tailoring and Embroidery in Andhra Pradesh

During this completed project, SPREAWS provided vocational training in Tailoring and Embroidery to 25 economically disadvantaged rural young women at two central locations in the Dugganapalli and Sivalpalli villages of Chennur Mandal, Kadapa district.

The required sewing and embroidery machines and the raw materials required for training were procured and the training conducted in 2 batches (morning and afternoon) to allow more personal attention to the students.

The training curriculum covered a wide range of practical skills, including cutting and stitching various garments, hemming, button stitching, embroidery on sarees and blouses etc..The trainees also learnt making household items such as bed covers, table covers etc. In addition, the women received entrepreneurship and marketing skills training to help run their own small businesses.

The 8 – month training phase was followed by a 4-month production phase, in which under the guidance of the experienced persons, the newly trained women were engaged in hands-on garment production and embroidery work. This practical experience enhanced their technical capabilities and has helped them start their own small businesses. The women have been connected with local retailers and wholesalers to help them earn sustainable income.

The program is designed to be self-sustaining after one year of PPI funding to provide similar training to other women in the subsequent years. SPREAWS will also be able to use self-generated funds to provide low-interest loans to the trainees to purchase the sewing machines for starting their own small businesses.
